About Jeniffer

Jeniffer Duncan, LPC, LAT — THerapist in Oregon

I don’t do therapy that lets you hide behind your “I’m fine” mask.

If you’re anything like my clients, you are exhausted from people-pleasing and the constant anxiety radar that never turns off. You’re smart, self-aware, and can articulate your patterns clearly, but somehow you still feel the same.

It happens when we address the automatic responses stored in your nervous system, like how your body goes into high alert when someone's mood shifts, or how your chest tightens and heart races from the smallest criticism.

I see through the performance. And I’m going to (kindly) name it.

My clients tell me they feel truly seen — not the version of yourself you present to the world, but who you actually are underneath. When you slip into your “I’m fine” routine or start intellectualizing your feelings instead of actually experiencing them, I’ll ask you to get more in tune with your body because that’s where the real information lives.

I’m direct in a way that many therapists aren’t, but I’m never harsh. You can’t bullshit me (despite how charming you are!) — but I also won’t shame you for trying. I’ll push when you need to be pushed and provide safety when you need to fall apart.

I’ll encourage you to learn how to trust yourself.

Through our work together, you’ll reconnect with emotions and parts of yourself that feel too risky to express. You’ll discover who you are underneath the intellect and performance. The crazy part? You’ll come to find you actually like her.

Ready to do the real work?

This isn’t quick-fix therapy where you get to be the “easy” client. This is about changing your relationship with yourself. It will be uncomfortable at times. It will ask everything of you. It’s how you get to feeling genuinely seen and accepted: starting with yourself.

This work goes beyond talking.

I combine art therapy and somatic approaches because the patterns you're trying to change aren't stored in the logical part of your brain. They’re held in your nervous system, your body, and parts of your psyche that words alone can’t reach.

While you can intellectually understand why you feel anxious, lasting change requires working with the whole person.

That’s where I come in.

Why Art therapy & Somatic therapy?

Before becoming a therapist, I was first an artist.

Throughout my youth, I was drawn to the way art allows an individual to express themselves without the use of words, allowing the art to become its own language and a way to express your thoughts, feelings, and beliefs.

I enjoy how making art has the possibility to depict an idea directly and in-your-face, or abstractly, like a hidden message is held within the paint or clay.

I value how the right or wrong way of expressing yourself through art isn’t up for discussion. The art simply becomes an expression, regardless of it being “good or bad.”

As an art therapist, I have seen the process of art-making be a conduit for my clients to become playful, curious, and spontaneous in their own expression, and process their fear in a safe way.

When a client lets go of expectations, they are often able to reveal parts of themselves in a drawing, collage, painting, or sculpture that has been wanting to be seen and understood without judgement. This is the moment where healing can begin.

Art as therapy is the act of focusing on the process vs. the outcome. This gives you the freedom to experiment without the fear that the finished product needs to be perfect. This is an opportunity for you to get out of your head and actually be in the act of art making. Strong emotions can come through the artwork in a safe and contained way, rather than catching you off guard.

My role as your art therapist is to support your exploration of thoughts and emotions through art, while also providing structure and directives.

Somatic Therapy

Somatic therapy is the process of focusing on the mind-body connection. It allows for less emotional dissociation and lets the brain turn off the automatic emergency response.

When first starting therapy, I find my clients get caught up in their thinking and they don’t realize how they are feeling in their own bodies. This neglect actually leads to increased anxiety and fear, causing you to feel distracted and unsure of yourself.

Somatic therapy supports my clients to pause and notice what they feel, where they feel it, and it provides a way to move through it, rather than to block it out.

Recognizing how emotions impact different parts of their body, my clients are able to understand and trust their instincts, not dismiss them.

Through our work together, I want you to trust yourself and recognize how your instincts have helped you survive. In doing this, you’ll develop a stronger sense of self, reduce your anxiety, say no when you need to, and be more present in the moment so that you can start to actually enjoy the beautiful life you’ve built.

There are many ways to communicate thoughts and feelings openly.

In therapy, we need to find the right fit.

I have found art therapy and somatic therapy to be the right fit for clients like you who get too caught up in their thinking and need a different way to make change last.

The human body is not an instrument to be used, but a realm of one’s being to be experienced, explored, enriched and, thereby, educated.
